Coquitlam at a Glance
Evidence of Coquitlam's heritage, which can be traced back centuries, is found
throughout this coastal city, located a short 30-minute drive from downtown Vancouver
and 20 minutes from the U.S. border.
The area's earliest documented residents, the Coast Salish, are credited with
the name Coquitlam, which translates to 'small red fish', the bounty by which
the Salish survived. Waves of immigrants began arriving in the late 1800s and
in 1909, a large settlement of French Canadians made their way to Coquitlam to
participate in the growing lumber industry. Today, the French language can still
be heard while perusing Coquitlam's Maillardville
district. Much of the area's past can be uncovered at Heritage
Square. Here, guests will find the early 1900s Makin
House, a historic home adorned with significant artifacts and antiques, and
the CPR
Station House and Caboose, where many immigrants and Quebecois first imprinted
their steps into West Coast history.
